Cranston, RI - Gloria A. Higgins, 83, a lifelong resident of Cranston, died Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Morgan Health Center in Johnston. She was the beloved wife of Donald P. Higgins Sr. with whom she celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on September 8, 2016.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (Avedisian) Jacobson, she graduated from Cranston High School Class of 1950. She continued her studies and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bryant College. Gloria worked as a supervisor employed by AMICA Insurance for 14 years and later for the State of Rhode Island as a receptionist and secretary at the Intake Service Center in Cranston.
She was a member of St. David's on-the-Hill Episcopal Church in Cranston where she made lifelong friends and was involved in parish activities, including the ECW, rummage sales and annual church bazaar.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving and caring mother and grandmother, as well as a dedicated sister and faithful friend. She was a woman who warmed the hearts of many. She loved to bake for church functions and for her family and holiday meals were truly cherished.
Gloria's family would like to express their sincerest thanks and gratitude for all who cared for and visited her. We appreciated all the calls, cards and time spent with her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Donald P. "Butch" Higgins, Jr. & his wife Suzanne of Cranston, Donna S. Young & her husband Bill of New Durham, NH and Jennifer M. Pate & her husband Frank of Cranston. She was a devoted "Grammy" to her three grandchildren: Michaela M. (Young) Tewksbury, Jill E. Young and Alexander F. Pate. She was the sister of the late Natalie M. Jacobson and Muriel Cooney.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 17 from 3:00 - 6:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Her funeral service will be on Saturday, February 18 at 9:00 am at St. David's on-the-Hill Episcopal Church, 200 Meshanticut Valley Parkway, Cranston. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
